History of Our Church

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

Governmentally - Each local congregation controls its own affairs and lifestyle.

Belief and Worship - We believe in freedom of belief and forms of worship, although we emphasize preaching and tend toward an enlightened understanding of Christian Faith and doctrine.  Our worship tends to be quite formal and reserved.

Concern for Society - The National Denomination, more so than most local congregations, has continued a ministry of taking stands on social issues recognizing that the truly important factors shaping our lives are no longer those of personal morality but of actions and decisions made by groups exerting POWER.

HISTORY OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

The United Church of Christ is a result of mergers of The Congregational Church, Christian Church, Reformed Church and the Evangelical Church.

CONGREGATIONAL CHURCHES began in 1600's among settlers in America from England and the European continent who wished to be free in thought and conscience as they interpreted the Word of God in the Scriptures.  (Pilgrims)

CHRISTIAN CHURCHES were organized in 1820 when three groups of churches in New England, Kentucky, and North Carolina united and chose to be called simply the Christian Church.

REFORMED CHURCHES came from Switzerland and the Rhine River Valley in Germany in the early 1700's.  The founders settled mainly in Pennsylvania.  Later they shared the westward development of the country.

EVANGELICAL CHURCHES originated in Germany and migrated to America in the early 1800's to escape the state church (Lutheran) and the troubles accompanying Napoleon's rise to power.  Landing at New Orleans, they moved on into Missouri and Texas.

In 1931 the Congregational Churches and the Christian Churches merged to become the Congregational Christian Churches, and in 1934 the Evangelical Churches and the Reformed Churches merged to form the Evangelical and Reformed Church.

In 1957 the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Churches merged to form our present denomination - The United Church of Christ.

UNITED COMMUNITY CHURCH in Sun City Center

SUN CITY CENTER'S FIRST CHURCH

United Community Church in Sun City Center was the first Church in our community and has always been very ecumenical and open to Christians of all denominational backgrounds.  Current membership is from 27 denominations.

The establishment of the United Community Church 50 + years ago was an incredible accomplishment for those few early participants of the Bible Study Group who had the foresight and ambition to start the spiritual endeavor, as well as for those worshipers who continued to plan and implement improvements as needs of the community changed.  However, what has never changed is the overall mission of the church to be a caring church congregation united in God's love, serving the community.
